Love visiting unique places? There are many notable libraries across the world but here are a few worth visiting in San Diego aside from the 35 branches of the San Diego City Public Libraries and 34 branches of the County of San Diego Public Libraries:

GIA in Carlsbad

They always have a wide range of gems and reading material as well as audiovisuals about gems available for viewing. It is open to the public but appointments are required for viewing repository items and rare books. The museum in the same building is pretty cool too!

The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Library

The university library is named after Theodor Geisel, the mind behind Dr. Seuss. They currently have an exhibit featuring his art and works. Last month they had an exhibit about comic books to coincide with Comic Con.  They usually have cool events going on for the public as well as students, including some recent workshops about working in libraries and networking events.

San Diego Zoo Library

The San Diego Zoo is a famous and highly visited spot but the Zoo’s main library houses most of the Zoo’s books and print journals. Their library website below contains their library catalog covering books, journals, animal and plant conservation information, research quality fact sheets about animals and much more. If you are an animal lover, this is the place to go!

The San Diego Natural History Research Library

The San Diego Natural History Research Library has over 9 million materials covering plants, animals, and fossils with a particular focus on California, Baja California and the southwestern U.S. The library has an extensive rare book collection, map collection, historic photographic images, fine art collection, and archives of primary resources documenting the early days of the museum, dating back to the 19th century. An appointment is needed to use the library.

Museum of Photographic Arts

Located in the lovely Balboa Park, this is one of the few libraries dedicated specifically to the art of photography.  The Library’s collection contains more than 20,000 items, including artist monographs, rare books, magazines, reference materials, and more. The Library is an incredible resource for anyone with an interest in the medium of photography. An appointment may be required.

San Diego Genealogical Society Library

The Genealogical Research Library is maintained by the San Diego Genealogical Society to promote family history and genealogy. It collects, preserves and publishes San Diego County historical records. It has an extensive collection of over 10,000 items and 1,000 periodicals including War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records Union and Confederate Armies and The New England Historical and Genealogical Register.
